Johannes Vermeer, The girl with the earring, c. 1665, Oil on canvas, 44.5 cm × 39 cm (17.5 in × 15 in), Mauritshuis, The Hague, Netherlands. The painting is a tronie, the Dutch 17th-century description of a 'head' that was not meant to be a portrait. It depicts a European girl wearing an exotic dress, an oriental turban, and an improbably large pearl earring. In 2006, the Dutch public selected it as the most beautiful painting in the Netherlands.

More from my recent visit to #amsterdam to see the #Rembrandt show at the #rijksmuseum. It was wonderful to see this , the most famous of Rembrandt’s paintings. Some of the characters in the paintings are so dominant, it’s hard to take one’ eyes off them. #thenightwatch #culturalamsterdam #thisgirltravels #beautifulamsterdam #holland #thenetherlands #art #artists #dutchart #17thcentury

Eugene Delacroix, Liberty Leading the People (La Liberte Guidant le Peuple) (c.1830) 260cm x 325cm Liberty Leading the People is a painting by Eugène Delacroix commemorating the July Revolution of 1830, which toppled King Charles X of France. A woman personifying the concept and the Goddess of Liberty leads the people forward over a barricade and the bodies of the fallen, holding the flag of the French Revolution – the tricolour, which again became France's national flag after these events – in one hand and brandishing a bayonetted musket with the other. The figure of Liberty is also viewed as a symbol of France and the French Republic known as Marianne.#EugeneDelacroix #Delacroix #LibertyLeadingthePeople #LaLiberteGuidantlePeuple #MuseeduLouvre #LouvreMuseum #Louvre #Paris

Titles In Art A picture’s title is often our first guide to understanding the image. Yet paintings didn’t always have titles, and many canvases acquired their names from curators, dealers, and printmakers in the 18th and 19th century, not the artists. To title a painting is easy when it is based on a literary source or if the subject is obvious like "The Adoration of the Shepards" or "Vase with Flowers". In modern art, especially abstract art, titling artworks became more difficult. Mondrian called his pieces "Compositions", Kandinsky called his "Improvisations". Even more artworks in this era are just called "Untitled". Coming up with a great title for an artwork can be a difficult task. Many artists feel it’s more work to come up with a title than it is to create a painting. So the question arises, do titles really matter? Some might say: no. I believe a particularly good title will definately help to sell the artwork. But what is a good title? Titling an artwork is challenging because you have several potentially conflicting goals with a good title. Goal 1: A good title will provide insight into the inspiration for the artwork, and may help the artwork tell its story. Goal 2: A good title will leave room for the viewer to bring his or her own meaning and interpretation to the artwork. No matter what goal, an original, catchy, provocative and or lyrical title certainly helps to remember the artworks better. Famous examples of this are the titles: "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" by Damien Hirst and "The Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali. How important are titles for you as an artlover and what are your favorites? Do you prefer titles that provide insight into the inspiration for the artwork or do you prefer a title that leaves room for the viewer to bring his/her own meaning and interpretation to it? #artquestionsanddebates #arthistory #dali #salvadordali #historyofart @lets_talk_about_art @my_favorite_work_of_art #thepersistenceofmemory
